Summit Expedition

The Kilimanjaro Journey

Africa's most iconic mountain. Led by the man who's already stood on every summit on earth.

Kilimanjaro is 5,895 metres above sea level. It is the highest point on the continent, the most visible mountain in Africa, and the mountain that Sibusiso Vilane has summited more times than most people have climbed stairs. When he takes you up, he takes you with the knowledge of a man who has stood on the summit of Everest twice and walked to both poles. The altitude does not surprise him. The cold does not unsettle him. And he has never lost anyone on the mountain.

Day by day

Day 1–2

Arrival and Moshi Preparation

Land in Kilimanjaro. Two nights in Moshi for kit checks, briefings, and the first views of the mountain from the courtyard of a working Tanzanian guest house. Sibusiso walks you through what the next seven days will demand.

Day 3

Lemosho Gate to Big Tree Camp

Into the montane forest. The approach through ancient Podocarpus trees — a cathedral of green before the moorland opens above. Camp at 2,780m. The air is still thick; use it while you have it.

Day 4

Shira Plateau

The forest breaks into open heath. Volcanic outcrops, giant lobelia, and the first clear view of Kibo's summit. Camp at 3,840m. The mountain begins to reveal itself.

Day 5

Barranco Valley Descent and Ascent

The most technically interesting day: down into the Barranco Valley, across the Great Barranco Wall (hands required — this is genuine climbing), and up to Karanga Camp. Altitude 3,995m.

Day 6

High Camp at Barafu

A short but meaningful day. By early afternoon you are at 4,673m. Rest. Hydrate. Sibusiso speaks about the summit window and what to expect in the next 12 hours. Sleep by 7pm.

Day 7

Summit Night — Uhuru Peak

Midnight departure. Six hours of walking in darkness, headtorches cutting through the cold. Stella Point at dawn. Then: Uhuru Peak. 5,895 metres. You are on the highest point in Africa.

Day 8–9

Descent and Amboseli Safari

Rapid descent to Mweka Gate. Then south: two nights in Amboseli National Park. Elephant herds against Kilimanjaro's southern face. The mountain that was above you is now behind you.

Why With Sibu & Bavu

What makes this different

No one else on this mountain has stood on Everest twice and walked to both poles. Sibusiso does not talk about Kilimanjaro as a big challenge — because he has context that most guides cannot provide. He knows what difficult actually means. Which means he knows when to push and when to rest, when the mountain is asking something of you and when it is simply asking you to breathe. Bavukile manages the logistics so that Sibusiso can focus entirely on the people.
